Book Launch Q&A: Stephanie Battaglino Author of Reflections From Both Sides of the Glass Ceiling #booklaunch

As the founder and owner of Follow Your Heart, LLC  (www.StephanieBattaglino.com) Stephanie is an internationally  recognized speaker, workshop presenter, trainer, author and  workplace diversity & inclusion consultant. She currently sits on the  Board of PFLAG National and is the Chair of their Business Advisory  Council.

For Stephanie Battaglino, her lifelong journey of self-discovery closely paralleled her daily grind of  trudging up the corporate ladder. Amidst the successes and failures of working as a male in the corporate world, Stephanie finally realized that the only path to career fulfillment was to embrace her true self once and for all. That it resulted in her becoming the first officer in the history of New York Life to come out on the job as transgender is not surprising. What was surprising was her abrupt introduction to that generations-old nemesis of working women everywhere, the Glass Ceiling. What she quickly realized was that her embrace of her authentic self came with a price: the loss of male privilege.

Reflections from Both Sides of the Glass Ceiling: Finding My Authentic Self in Corporate America is part memoir, part cautionary tale of what it is like to experience a career on both sides of the gender divide. Stephanie’s unique and very personal experience provides a powerful trailblazing story of inspiration, self-discovery, and triumph – for ALL women.

After your book was released, what was the first thing you did when getting ready for your book launch?

I didn’t wait for my book to be released to create a marketing plan for the book with my publisher.  We started working on that 6 months out.

Did you do anything different to spice up your website in lieu of your upcoming book release?

Yes.  There is a dedicated section of my website specifically for the book – where it is available, links to pre-order/order and a list of all of my reviews/endorsements.

Did you ever consider using a PR agency to help you promote your book or did you prefer the DIY route?

Yes, and I do.

Were finding reviews a top priority for you and, if yes, how did you approach that?

That was certainly a part of the marketing strategy that I worked on with my publisher.  We targeted GoodReads and NetGalley specifically.

What are your views on social media for marketing your book?

It’s essential.  Actually, in today’s connected world, it’s table stakes.  I do not think you can successfully market your book with leveraging social media.

What social media has worked best for you?

For me, and the audiences I’m targeting, LinkedIn and Facebook – via my personal page and a dedicated book page – have really helped.  Twitter and Instagram too, but less so.  There’s just so much clutter and such an insanely large volume of messages on both of those platforms, it’s hard to break through.

Did you write a press release and do you think it worked for you?

Yes.  My PR firm has and it has been picked up and brought a few interview/excerpt  requests my way.

Did you create a book trailer?

One of the virtual book tours I am on has created one for me!  You can view it here:

Did you time your book launch around a certain holiday?

We did time the book’s release to occur before Pride Month with the thought being that there would be some buzz generated around its May 11th release that would carry me into and through Pride Month.

Any tips for those authors wanting to set up a successful book launch?

Create a marketing plan in collaboration with your publisher, but that said, be aware that you – as the author – will be responsible for a significant portion of it.  That and be prepared to work your network!
